Massachusetts, è uno dei più importanti porti pescherecci del nord Atlantico. Da qui nell'ottobre 1991 parte il
peschereccio Andrea Gail, comandato da Billy Tyne, pescatore esperto reduce però da una serie di battute deludenti.
Accanto a Billy, a comporre l'equipaggio ci sono: Bobby, che ha bisogno di soldi per pagarsi il divorzio e costruirsi
una nuova vita con la fidanzata Christine; Dale, esperto marinaio che deve mantenere moglie e figlio; Alfred, un
giamaicano di grande vitalità; Bugsy uno del posto che cerca una compagnia da trovare al ritorno a casa; Sully, il
sostituto dell'ultimo momento. Billy è convinto di poter mettere fine al momento sfortunato, andando oltre le normali
rotte di pesca del New England, fino a Flemish Cap, un'area lontana conosciuta per i ricchi banchi di pesce. Quando è
in mare aperto, viene a sapere della tempesta che si sta formando al largo ma, a differenza della collega Linda che si
trova su un'altra imbarcazione, Billy pensa di potercela fare. Convince l'equipaggio e tutti decidono di andare avanti.
Ma la perturbazione si sta ingrossando sempre più: l'uragano Grace è in rotta di collisione con altre due correnti
di alta pressione che vengono dal Nord. L'incontro dei tre sistemi provocherà una tempesta di proporzioni mai viste
prima. Gli uomini dell'Andrea Gail hanno effettuato una ricca pesca e, contenti, sono sulla strada del ritorno, quando
l'evento si verifica. La furia degli elementi non lascia scampo. Tutto l'equipaggio perde la vita, e i loro nomi si
aggiungono a quelli che, prima di loro, sono rimasti vittime del mare e dei suoi pericoli.
